Our Fr General concelebrates Mass with Pope Francis
P. Óscar I. Aparicio
On the morning of 7th February, Fr Saverio Cannistrà concelebrated with His Holiness Pope Francis in Santa Marta in the Vatican. After returning from a long journey to assist at the episcopal ordination of Mons. Peter Chung, the first Discalced Carmelite Korean bishop, he landed in Rome at mid-night. At Fiumicino airport Fr Rafal was waiting for him to give him the pleasing news that within a few hours he had to go to concelebrate Mass with the Pope in Santa Marta.
After a few hours of sleep and with the time difference weighing heavily upon him, Fr Saverio concelebrated with the Bishop of Rome at six in the morning. After Mass he was able to exchange greetings briefly with the Pope. First of all he conveyed his own and the Order's loyalty to the successor of Peter. He then presented the Pope with the latest biography, written by our Carmelite brother, Mons. Guy Gaucher, on Saint Therese of Lisieaux, of whom the Pope is a fervent admirer. Finally, following Vatican protocol, they arranged to have to have a broader and more relaxed conversation.
Fr Saverio, with his usual simplicity, told us in the dining room about the meeting he had with the Pope, and the happiness he felt in being able to shake hands with our Pope Francis. It is a happiness felt by the whole Order for the gift God has given us in the person of Pope Francis.
